The world No10, Thomas Enqvist put Sweden back in business in the Davis Cup tie against Switzerland by beating Lorenzo Manta 7-6 (7-4), 7-6(11-9), 6-2.
The score after the first day of play in Lulea thus read 1-1. Enqvist was highly favoured to win but was forced to fight really hard versus an opponent ranked as modestly as 328 on the ATP list. The match actually lasted 2 hours 9 minutes.
"The visitors put us under pressure", the Swedish captain Carl-Axel Hageskog explained. "Both singles became tougher than I expected, and it might well be a thriller on the final two days ".
Neither in the first nor second set did the players manage to breakthrough. Logically the sets went to tie-break. After 2 hrs. and 3 min., the first break in the match arrived, when Manta dropped his delivery in the sixth game of the third set. From then, the experienced Enqvist easily manouvred himself to victory.
